2008 November 1. Spirit
did purchase the AFP cell similar to the one we prototyped and is described below.
We are shipping the cell to them now. Here is a 15M video showing the awsome
250,000 pound machine in action. Keep in mind it makes a part that is 40'
long, 20' in diameter and is highly contoured. The video we took here shows
the machine in synchronous mode with the part spinning at six RPM. The part
is just for demonstration purposes, but does show the athleticism of the machine. The machine has the following axis arrangement: X,Y,Z
prismatic and A,B,C (rx, ry, rz respectively) rotary. X is 150 meters long,
Y 10 meters, Z 5 meters, A 135 degrees, B 180 degrees, C continous. The seventh
(the big rotary axis) is independent from the machine. The machine's part
program execution is slaved to the position and velocity of the part. The
machine accelerates variably upto nearly .5G and has a max cutting feedrate of 2500"/min.

For
my part, I spent 2.5 years working on average more than 50 hours per week
writing the CNC executive that makes this cell possible. Special
thanks to Dr. Inaba president and founder of FANUC who allowed me to
use the FANUC Customer’s Board to write the necessary software to make
this unique set of machines work. Thanks also to Tomoaki Ishibe who
advocated for Electroimpact with FANUC and Bob Wampler who believed in the
concept enough to double down on Electroimpact. We did exactly what
we said was possible.
